The City of Frankfort Tree Board is partnering with the District and is launching an aggressive program to inventory and tag all Ash trees in public spaces within the city. They are also treating selected ash trees with pesticides by a certified pest applicator. It is expected the tags will provide a powerful visual impact, raise public awareness and inspire the implementation of an effective treatment plan.
Benzie County is now on the ‘quarantine’ list along with the whole lower peninsula in the State of Michigan for the presence of the Emerald Ash Borer. The Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive insect responsible for decimating ash trees throughout Michigan and surrounding states. Read about the history and treatment options on the Emerald Ash Borer from Dr. David Robert’s MSU-Extension site.
Benzie County residents have a reason to be aware. The emerald ash borer is here and consuming the life out of many of our ash trees. Earlier this month David Roberts, Ph.D from Michigan State University gave a detailed overview of the history and destruction of the EAB in Michigan at an informational meeting for Benzie County residents.
“Watch your ash. Start looking at your trees and decide what your investment is in that tree.” -David Roberts, Ph.D.
We are urging Benzie County township and villages to join us with inventorying your trees and tagging all ash. From that point we will help you with the options of tree removal, replanting, and treating the ash you want to save. We are trying to be proactive. As the infected trees die, city fathers and township boards will be faced with removing trees before they become a liability, with potential harm to property and humans.

Does the Benzie Conservation District have a recommended course of action for treating infected Ash trees? We have about 10 trees on our property (north side of Crystal Lake) that appear to be affected. Any related information will be greatly appreciated.

Steve, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Yes, there are steps and treatments you can apply to affected trees – they generally involve spraying or root-drenching and should be done by a certified pesticide applicator. For more info and a list of area applicators, please call our office Mon-Fri, 8:30-4:30 and we’ll fill you in. Thanks!
